Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Senior Payments Engineer to design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable, and reliable payment processing systems. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in payment gateways, transaction processing, financial technology (FinTech), and payment security standards.
You will work closely with product managers, software engineers, and business teams to deliver seamless payment experiences for merchants and customers while ensuring high availability, performance, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain payment processing systems, APIs, and integrations with payment gateways and financial institutions.
- Build secure and reliable solutions for payment authorization, capture, settlement, refunds, and reconciliation.
- Integrate third-party payment providers, acquiring banks, and financial services.
- Implement payment security best practices, including PCI DSS requirements and secure handling of sensitive payment data.
- Develop scalable backend services to process high volumes of transactions with minimal latency.
- Monitor payment systems, troubleshoot transaction failures, and resolve production issues.
- Improve payment success rates, system reliability, and transaction processing performance.
- Collaborate with product, compliance, and engineering teams to deliver new payment features.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical architecture and engineering standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in payment processing or FinTech.
- Strong programming experience in languages such as Java, Python, Go, or Node.js.
- Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience integrating payment gateways and financial service APIs.
- Strong understanding of payment transaction lifecycles, including authorization, capture, settlement, refunds, and chargebacks.
- Experience with relational databases, message queues, and cloud infrastructure.
- Knowledge of payment security, encryption, tokenization, and PCI DSS principles.
- Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and production troubleshooting.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with payment orchestration platforms, digital wallets, recurring billing, or subscription payments.
- Familiarity with fraud detection, risk management, and anti-money laundering controls.
- Experience with payment networks, acquiring banks, and card schemes.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Experience building highly available, fault-tolerant financial systems.
- Previous experience mentoring engineers or leading technical projects.
